A multi-association letter , signed by the Meat Institute and U.S. Hide, Skin and Leather Association, urges U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and the Trump administration against imposing tariffs on a proposed list of 1,300 Chinese products worth more than $50 billion. The organizations, which sent the letter to Lighthizer ahead of the May 15 public hearing examining the proposed tariffs, contend the tariffs will result in higher prices for American consumers, increased costs for American manufacturers, decreased global competitiveness for American technology and other industries and undue harm to the overall U.S. economy. Instead, the organizations recommend the administration consult closely with industry and Congress to develop a joint approach to address the longstanding commercial issues with China, including the country's ongoing intellectual property rights violations, forced technology transfers and state interventions.
