Industry Connects at Meat Industry Summit; Institute Presents Two Awards

More than 300 Meat Institute members and guests gathered in San Antonio, Texas last week for the annual Meat Industry Summit . The Summit featured education sessions covering general business topics, labor and employment issues, regulatory matters and public affairs.

The Meat Institute also presented two of its highest honors during an awards luncheon. The Edward C. Jones Community Service Award was presented to Smithfield Foods in recognition of the company's significant contributions to the sustainability of local communities by providing hunger relief, education and veterans support, and through other initiatives that address the specific needs of the communities in which it operates. The award is named for the late Edward Jones of Jones Dairy Farm, who was a model of community service, and honors individuals or companies that have demonstrated a strong commitment to their communities.

Cascade Energy, meanwhile, received the Industry Advancement Award, which honors an individual, group or company whose work has contributed to the success of the meat and poultry industry. Cascade Energy was presented with the award in recognition of its efforts to help meat and poultry companies optimize their energy consumption to lower costs and reduce their environmental impact by targeting greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition, attendees participated in numerous networking opportunities and social events offered, including the NAMI Ambassadors Reception; the Issues, Answers, Actions Breakfast; and a Political Action Committee Reception. The popular Sausage Fest competition showcased products from Meat Institute member companies and attendees chose Big Fork Brands' Portobello Bacon Sausage as the winner of the "Hold the Mustard" Award in a blind taste test. Neal Leonard, Surlean Foods; Gia and Gunter Becker, Treif USA; Dave Premo, Birko; and Dave Bryant, the David Bryant Company won the annual John Duyn Memorial Golf Tournament. Meat Institute committee and Board of Directors meetings also were held.
