Meat Institute Senior Vice President of International Affairs Bill Westman and U.S. Hide, Skin and Leather President Stephen Sothmann discussed the Trump Administration’s worldwide steel and aluminum tariffs and its decision to impose tariffs on up to $50 billion worth of Chinese exports to the U.S. in a segment that appeared Friday on China Global Television Network. Westman and Sothmann also addressed the implications of China’s decision to levy a 25 percent tariff on U.S. pork products in response to the steel and aluminum tariffs. Both Westman and Sothmann stressed the importance of fair trade for the U.S. meat, poultry and hides and skins industries, and called for a constructive dialogue between the U.S. and China to avoid further escalation of a trade war.
