Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) removed his nearly three-month hold on Gregg Doud, President Donald Trump's nominee to serve as chief agricultural negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). Flake had blocked Doud's nomination in response to a seasonal produce proposal put forth by the U.S. in North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations. Flake reportedly lifted the hold after receiving written commitment from Senate Finance Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and USTR Robert Lighthizer that his concerns would be addressed.

The Senate Finance Committee approved Doud's nomination in October 2017. A vote by the full Senate has not yet been scheduled, but Doud is expected to be confirmed. The Meat Institute supports Doud's nomination and sent association members a grassroots letter in January that urged the Senate to confirm him to his post.
