USDA and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) formally agreed to make oversight of food more efficient and effective by bolstering coordination between the two agencies. The formal agreement, announced last week, details efforts to increase interagency collaboration, efficiency and effectiveness regarding produce safety and biotechnology activities. The agreement also tasks both USDA and FDA with identifying ways to streamline regulation and reduce inspection inefficiencies.
Specifically, the agreement commits USDA and FDA to better align and enhance their efforts to develop regulatory approaches to biotechnology, as each agency works to fulfill commitments outlined in the September 2016 National Strategy for Modernizing the Regulatory System for Biotechnology Products and the more recent Task Force on Agriculture and Rural Prosperity Report. Additionally, the agreement calls for USDA and FDA to improve collaboration and cooperation regarding produce safety activities associated with implementing the Food Safety Modernization Act.share on facebook share on twitter
