Meat Institute Submits Comments to Health Canada Regarding Proposed Dietary Guidelines

The Meat Institute submitted comments to Health Canada regarding the agency’s proposed dietary recommendations . The guidelines recommend that Canadians increase their intake of plant-based sources of protein and reduce their consumption of processed and prepared foods, including foods that are high in sodium, sugar and saturated fat. In response, the Meat Institute argued that Health Canada’s recommendation favoring plant-based protein sources fails to adequately address the nutrient density and protein quality of foods, among other issues. Instead, the Meat Institute stated that meat and poultry are important components of a healthy diet because they provide essential amino acids; critical micronutrients, such as iron, zinc, selenium and B vitamins; and are high quality protein sources.

In addition, the Meat Institute took issue with recommendations that encourage reduced consumption of certain food products, such as those that are processed or contain saturated fat, asserting that the proposal may have unintended consequences on the intake of vegetables, fiber, protein, grains and dairy. The Meat Institute, therefore, emphasized that nutritional guidance should encourage a total diet approach to healthy eating, which promotes moderation, variety and calorie balance rather than focusing on nutrients and foods to limit.

Health Canada intends to publish final dietary guidelines and release a suite of consumer messages, tools and resources in early 2018.
