Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad formally marked the return of U.S. beef to the Chinese market during events held in Beijing and Shanghai on June 30 and July 1. Perdue and Branstad ceremonially cut prime rib that was shipped by Greater Omaha Packing Co., and met with China’s Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu and Vice Premier Wang Yang to discuss additional market access goals. Perdue was also joined by representatives from the Foreign Agricultural Service, U.S. Meat Export Federation, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and Nebraska Beef Council at a Chinese supermarket to promote the commercial availability of U.S. beef to Chinese consumers. U.S. beef access to China was officially restored in June ending a nearly 14-year ban triggered by a 2003 case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy.
