Study Finds Higher Intake of Animal Protein Foods Protects Against Age-Related Muscle Loss

Higher intake of animal-protein foods alone, and especially in combination with a physically active lifestyle, is associated with preservation of muscle mass and functional performance in older adults, according to new research published in the Journals of Gerontology. The study found that both men and women who consumed a diet higher in foods from animal sources preserved more skeletal muscle mass regardless of their level of physical activity. The beneficial effects of plant-based protein foods on muscle preservation, however, were only evident in physically active adults. Moreover, among less active individuals, only those consuming more animal protein-source foods showed reduced risks of functional decline.
