Lighthizer Confirmed as USTR

(North American Meat Institute)Robert Lighthizer was confirmed as U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) in an 82-14 Senate vote. With Lighthizer confirmed, the Trump Administration is expected to begin the formal process to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and pursue bilateral trade agreements with countries like the United Kingdom and Japan. Lighthizer previously served as deputy USTR under President Ronald Reagan. In addition to his role in the Reagan administration, Lighthizer represented the U.S. at meetings of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and meetings related to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, the precursor to the World Trade Organization. Furthermore, Lighthizer led the international trade law practice at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom for more than three decades.
