Meat Institute Submits Comments on Long-Term Sodium Guidance

The Meat Institute last week submitted comments to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding its draft guidance, " Voluntary Sodium Reduction Goals: Target Mean and Upper Bound Concentrations for Sodium in Commercially Processed, Packaged and Prepared Foods ." The Meat Institute said it was "premature" to establish sodium reduction targets and underscored the importance of considering the totality of scientific evidence, including emerging, high-quality evidence, on sodium intake, before initiating a widespread sodium reduction program. The comments also detailed the unintended, adverse consequences that may result from targeting sodium and stressed the important role sodium plays in food safety and taste. In addition, NAMI said long-term targets should not be finalized until a comprehensive assessment of the short-term targets is conducted. The Institute also said time is needed to address the potential success and limitations of sodium replacement technologies implemented after the short-term targets are finalized.
