The New York Times editorial board penned an op-ed encouraging ratification of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement. The editorial board stated the agreement could stimulate exports while helping to reduce environmental destruction and improve the lives of workers in countries like Brunei, Peru, Chile and Vietnam, which were part of the negotiation. The editorial board notes that the agreement requires signatory countries to adopt minimum wages, protect endangered species and agree not to discriminate against foreign businesses in the interest of domestic and state-owned firms. The Times argued that if the U.S. abandons TPP, China will emerge more powerful in the Asia-Pacific arena, able to set and negotiate trade rules, build alliances and assert regional leadership, leaving America's position and influence greatly diminished.
