California Committee Votes Against Listing Nitrite in Combination With Amines or Amides as Carcinogen

California's Carcinogen Identification Committee (CIC), which advises and assists the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), last week voted unanimously not to list "nitrites in combination with amines and/or amides" as a carcinogen under the state's Proposition 65 labeling law. A listing would have triggered warning labels on affected products and point-of-purchase information.

In addition to submitting extensive comments to the CIC opposing the listing, toxicologist Jay Murray, Ph.D., testified on behalf of the Meat Institute and several other organizations before the panel to explain that the science did not support the proposed listing. The Institute highlighted the insufficient and limited toxicological data that exists as a principal reason against listing the entire category of nitrite in combination with amines or amides as a carcinogen. The Institute also stated that there is a complete absence of applicable epidemiologic evidence to support an association between nitrite in combination with amines or amides and cancer risk.
