Meat Institute President and CEO Barry Carpenter today urged Congress to approve the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement. Carpenter said TPP is integral to the future growth of the U.S. meat and poultry industry by eliminating or reducing import tariffs on U.S. meat and poultry products in the world's fastest growing economic region. Carpenter added that the agreement will promote transparency, drive innovation and support robust labor standards.

Meanwhile, the White House on Friday indicated that Congress is no longer expected to vote on TPP during the lame-duck session. Trade analysts predict TPP has no chance of passage following the election of Donald Trump, who strongly opposes the agreement. The fate of two other trade initiatives still under negotiation - the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership and the Trade in Services Agreement - is also uncertain.
