The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) last week released its Fiscal Year (FY) 2017-2021 Strategic Plan , which will guide the agency's work over the next five years. The plan is focused on achieving three broad goals: preventing foodborne illness and protecting public health; modernizing inspection systems, policies and scientific approaches; and achieving operational excellence. To achieve these goals, FSIS will continue to work to prevent contamination and limit illness from regulated products, improve food safety and humane handling practices through the adoption of innovative approaches and maintain a well-trained and engaged workforce with a focus to improve processes and services.
