Meat Institute Urges Vietnam to Reconsider Establishing Zero Tolerance Levels on Veterinary Drugs

Wednesday, November 2, 2016

(North American Meat Institute)

The Meat Institute joined other livestock industry organizations in urging Vietnam to apply science-based standards when establishing veterinary drug maximum residue limits (MRLs). The organizations sent the letter in response to World Trade Organization Notice SPS/N/VNM/82, in which Vietnam proposes to revoke multiple established MRLs and instead implement a zero tolerance policy on residues of various veterinary drugs commonly used in livestock production. The organizations argued a zero tolerance on residues would drastically restrict exports of U.S. beef and pork to Vietnam, and said the proposal would reverse MRLs that have undergone rigorous risk assessments and are in accord with international standards.
