Meat Institute Vice President of Regulatory and Scientific Programs Susan Backus, in testimony to the National Academies of Medicine, stressed the importance of selecting Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) members from a broad cross-section of disciplines, including academia, medical professions, non-governmental organizations and industry. Backus said that members representing a wide range of viewpoints would ensure all perspectives are considered and would reduce bias in the final guidelines. She also noted that it is inappropriate for DGAC members to publicly discuss the Scientific Report of the Committee while policymakers are developing the final guidance.
