The U.S. Ports Coalition, to which NAMI belongs, sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker urging the Commerce Department and other federal departments and agencies to continue to work with the South Korean government to swiftly resolve the impasse of cargo through the global supply chain resulting from the recent bankruptcy filing of the Hanjin Shipping Company. The Coalition underscored the detrimental economic impact of the situation for small- and medium-sized companies and for both importers and exporters of goods to and from the U.S. The Coalition also expressed concern regarding the transit of Hanjin ships and cargo logistics, citing steadily increasing freight charges and fees assessed on cargo that cannot be returned to the port, including chassis and empty containers.
