Meat Institute and USHSLA Call on ILWU and PMA to Begin Contract NegotiationsTuesday, August 16, 2016
(North American Meat Institute)
The Meat Institute and the U.S. Hide, Skin and Leather Association (USHSLA) joined 123 other organizations in signing a multi-association letter urging the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime Association to begin early contract discussions to avoid future delays and instability at West Coast ports. The associations called on both the ILWU and PMA to establish a new model for future negotiations that stresses early and continuous dialogue, in response to the delays that occurred at West Coast ports in 2015. The associations also encouraged the ILWU and PMA to ensure there are no disruptions to cargo movement during future negotiations, citing the importance of maintaining arbitration mechanisms throughout the negotiating process.
The ILWU and PMA have since agreed to begin discussions regarding a contract extension. The current West Coast contract expires July 2019.share on facebook share on twitter
