Meat Institute Requests Extension in Comment Period for Voluntary Sodium Reduction Goals

The Meat Institute requested that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) extend the comment periods to 180 days regarding the "Voluntary Sodium Reduction Goals: Target Mean and Recommended Maximum Concentrations for Sodium in Commercially Processed, Packaged and Prepared Foods." The Institute asserted the current comment periods - 90 days for short-term targets and 150 days for long-term targets - provide insufficient time to adequately review and provide comments on the categories relevant to meat and poultry products, among other issues.

Citing the technical nature of the draft guidance and proposed targets, the Institute said the extension would allow additional time to consult with meat and poultry industry members to determine the impact of the proposal on the regulatory environment, marketing practices, research and development and industry suppliers.
