Meat Institute Solicits Comments on FDA's Draft Guidance for Voluntarily Reducing Sodium

The Meat Institute is soliciting member input on the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) draft guidance detailing voluntary sodium reduction targets for the food industry. The draft short-term, two-year targets seek to decrease sodium intake to about 3,000 milligrams (mg) per day, while the long-term, 10-year targets seek to reduce sodium intake to 2,300 mg per day. The targets, which cover nearly 150 food categories, including meat and poultry, sandwiches and mixed dishes, are intended to complement existing efforts by food manufacturers, restaurants and food service operations to reduce sodium in foods.

NAMI will file a comment extension request and co-signedn a request from the Sodium Coalition, asking for a total of 180 days to provide comments on both short- and long-term goals. FDA is currently accepting public comments on the draft guidance until August 31, 2016, and October 31, 2016, depending on the issue area.

The Meat Institute is also seeking member comments regarding the accuracy and policy implications of a survey of microbiological issues in meat and poultry products included in the draft guidance.
