NAMI’s Annual Hot Dog Lunch will be held this Thursday, July 14, at the Rayburn House Office Building Courtyard from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The popular event celebrates July as National Hot Dog month and convenes more than 1,000 lawmakers, congressional staff, meat industry representatives and members of the media on Capitol Hill. Seven vendors are expected to serve more than 3,500 hot dog and sausage products in the company of three Major League Baseball legends: Andre Dawson, Andy Van Slyke and Jack Clark.

During his 21-year baseball career, Dawson played for four different teams as a center and right fielder, spending most of his career with the Montreal Expos (1976–1986) and Chicago Cubs (1987–1992). An eight-time National League All-Star, Dawson was named the league's Rookie of the Year in 1977, and won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1987. Van Slyke is a former outfielder and centerfielder, playing for the St. Louis Cardinals (1983–1986), Pittsburgh Pirates (1987–1994), Baltimore Orioles (1995) and Philadelphia Phillies (1995). He appeared in three All-Star games and won five Gold Glove Awards and two Silver Slugger Awards. During his 18-season career, Clark played for the San Francisco Giants (1975–84), St. Louis Cardinals (1985–87), New York Yankees (1988), San Diego Padres (1989–90) and Boston Red Sox (1991–92). He won the Silver Slugger Award in 1985 and 1987 and was a four-time All-Star.

This year’s vendors include Boar’s Head Provisions Co., Inc.; Dietz & Watson, Inc.; Hofmann Sausage Company, LLC; Hormel Foods Corporation; Land O’Frost, Inc.; Smithfield Foods, Inc.; and Tyson Foods, Inc. The event is co-sponsored by American Bakers Association, American Beverage Association, Diageo, International Bottled Water Association and Snack Food Association.

As part of this year’s celebration, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC) is running a video contest, inviting people to submit videos sharing why they love hot dogs for a chance to win great prizes. Links to short videos, under two minutes, can be sent to contest@hot-dog.org through National Hot Dog Day on July 14. The most inspirational and creative videos will be selected as finalists and NHDSC Facebook fans will chose a winner to be announced Monday, July 25. Full contest details and other hot dog resources are available at www.hot-dog.org.
