Ireland Secures Improved Access to U.S. Beef Market

Ireland has gained increased access to the U.S. beef market, securing approval to export beef trimmings to the U.S. In 2015, the U.S. lifted its ban on Irish beef that was initially implemented following the detection of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, marking the first time in 15 years that beef from the European Union was permitted to enter the U.S. Irish Agriculture Minister Michael Creed announced in a July 6 statement that the U.S. agreed to recognize Ireland’s fresh and frozen beef inspection system as equivalent to the systems used in the U.S. Exports of Irish beef to the U.S. in 2015 were estimated at approximately 14 million Euros, but the agreement to accept beef trimmings is expected to considerably increase that figure.
