(North American Meat Institute)

Meat Institute Senior Manager of Public Affairs and Member Communications Michael Schumpp last week presented the meat industry's perspective on geographic indications - signs used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are linked to that origin - during a one-day seminar hosted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the Consortium for Common Food Names in Chicago, Illinois. The seminar detailed ways companies can protect trademarks and common food names that are under threat by European Union attempts to impose rules on GIs that could bar U.S. companies from using many generic food terms like bologna, salami and parmesan in the U.S. market and in markets around the world. NAMI also co-sponsored the event.
