The Meat Institute and the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) sent a letter to USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Service Jonathan Cordone calling on Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to swiftly create and fill the Under Secretary for Trade Position at USDA, as stipulated in the 2014 Farm Bill. In the letter, USMEF President and CEO Philip Seng and NAMI President and CEO Barry Carpenter underscored the importance of creating this subcabinet position to ensure sustained growth and profitability for the U.S. pork and beef industries. Seng and Carpenter encouraged USDA to be bold and to provide the necessary resources required to expand U.S. export potential and confront the challenges that face U.S. agriculture in the global market. Seng and Carpenter also urged USDA to complete its assessment of the new under secretary position in time for the next administration to have the benefit of the department's recommendations as it starts the process of forming its team and making key political appointments.
