The Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) released a Spanish version of Issue Paper 56 , “Process Labeling of Food: Consumer Behavior, the Agricultural Sector and Policy Recommendations.” CAST published the English version of the paper in October 2015. The publication details the advantages and disadvantages of food labels, examines consumer reactions to process labels and identifies the legal framework for process labeling. The paper’s authors conclude process labels can effectively bridge the informational gap between producers and consumers, but problems arise when labels are subject to consumer interpretation. The authors also state that governments should not impose bans on process labels and note that next-generation process labels should avoid “all or nothing” claims, while incorporating new technology and innovative ways to clearly inform consumers. Mandatory labels, according to the authors, should be used only when science-based facts prove that a product is harmful, and voluntary process labels should be true and scientifically verifiable.
