FDA Issues Draft Guidance to Industry for Voluntarily Reducing Sodium

Friday, June 10, 2016

(North American Meat Institute)

The Food and Drug Administration issued draft guidance detailing voluntary sodium reduction targets for the food industry. The draft short-term, two-year targets seek to decrease sodium intake to about 3,000 milligrams (mg) per day, while the long-term, 10-year targets seek to reduce sodium intake to 2,300 mg per day. The targets, which cover nearly 150 food categories, including meat and poultry, sandwiches and mixed dishes, are intended to complement existing efforts by food manufacturers, restaurants and food service operations to reduce sodium in foods. FDA is accepting public comments on this draft guidance until August 31, 2016, and October 31, 2016, depending on the issue area. Comments should be submitted online or by mail to the Division of Dockets Management (HFA-305), Food and Drug Administration, 5630 Fishers Lane, Room 1061, Rockville, Maryland 20852.
