Reuters Investigates IARC Process

A new special report by Reuters is critical of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and its process to determine potential cancer hazards. The article, How the World Health Organisation's cancer agency confuses consumers , specifically cites the evaluation of red and processed meat and the resulting consumer confusion that drew a clarification from the World Health Organization (WHO) as an example of the problems with IARC. It includes several critical comments from experts about IARC and its evaluation process.

"It's not good for science, it's not good for regulatory agencies. And for people? Well, they are just being confused," said Bob Tarone, a statistician formerly at the National Cancer Institute and now Biostatistics Director at the International Epidemiology Institute.
