Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s cabinet last week finalized a dozen pieces of legislation related to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), including one that would seek ratification of the trade agreement. The submission of the latter bill to the Japanese Diet—the country’s legislative body—would set in motion a timeline in which lawmakers could begin debate on the TPP in April, with passage possible by this summer. The other bills include measures on farming, fishing and forestry, as well as one that would provide financial support to livestock producers. Malaysia’s legislature has already ratified the agreement, and Australia and New Zealand’s parliaments commenced the approval process on February 9, 2016. The U.S. Congress has not yet identified a timeframe for a ratification vote.
