South Africa Now Accepting U.S. Pork Exports

The U.S. may now ship pork exports to South Africa. The products approved for export include a variety of raw and frozen products, such as bellies, hams, loins, ribs and shoulders, for unrestricted sale and other pork products for further processing. South Africa previously placed restrictions on U.S. pork imports to prevent the spread of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, despite the negligible transmission risk posed by U.S. livestock. South Africa, in early January, agreed to partially lift the ban on U.S. pork, after the Obama Administration announced it would suspend the country’s trade benefits under the African Growth and Opportunity Act.
