Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) unveiled draft legislation to pre-empt states from issuing their own mandatory labeling laws for foods that contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The bill would require the Secretary of Agriculture to establish a national voluntary labeling standard for GMO foods. The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry will hold a markup of the legislation this Thursday, February 25. The U.S. House of Representatives earlier last year passed legislation that would also prevent states from requiring labels on genetically modified foods.
