New USDA Deputy Chief Economist Named

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack selected Warren Preston, Ph.D., to serve as the next USDA deputy chief economist effective February 21, 2016. Preston most recently served as senior economist for agriculture policy in the Office of the Chief Economist (OCE), after holding the position of acting deputy chief economist for USDA. Prior to joining OCE, Preston served as an economist and associate deputy administrator analyzing and overseeing programs and policies across the full spectrum of marketing activities administered in the Agricultural Marketing Service’s livestock, poultry and seed program. From 1992 to 2001, Preston worked as an economist and branch chief in the Packers and Stockyards programs of the Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration, where he played a key role integrating economic analysis into investigative procedures and processes.
