Booren Speaks at AFIA Pet Food Conference

NAMI’s Vice President of Scientific Affairs Betsy Booren, Ph.D., last week presented at the American Feed Industry Association’s (AFIA) Pet Food Conference co-located with the 2016 International Production and Processing Expo in Atlanta, Georgia. Booren spoke about the food safety applications of whole genome sequencing, particularly regarding its use in foodborne illness investigation. Booren also addressed the impact of whole genome sequencing on the meat and poultry industry, citing its potential to identify emerging pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes. There are currently several efforts underway to sequence Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella Enteritidis, E. coli, Campylobacter, Vibrio and Cronobacter, as well as parasites and viruses.
