IPPE Sets Exhibitor Record

The meat and poultry industry last week gathered in Atlanta, Georgia for the 2016 International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE), which attracted more than 1,300 exhibiting companies, setting a new conference record. More than 30,000 industry professionals from over 100 countries attended the fourth annual expo at the Georgia World Congress Center.

The Meat Institute also honored six industry leaders at its inaugural Annual Awards Ceremony and Luncheon and presented Environmental Recognition Awards to 123 companies. The distinguished industry award recipients included Jim Lochner, former chief operating officer at Tyson Foods, Inc; Kerri Gehring, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University and president of the International HACCP Alliance; Sheldon Lavin, chairman and chief executive officer of OSI Group, LLC; Joseph Sebranek, Ph.D., distinguished professor of animal science at Iowa State University; Mohammad Koohmaraie, Ph.D., chief executive officer of the meat division at IEH Laboratories; and JBT Corporation/Wolf-tec. James Cunningham, comedian, author and host of the television series Eat St., served as the luncheon’s master of ceremonies. The luncheon was sponsored by Zoetis, Hawkins and MISA.

The 2016 IPPE included a large offering of meat-specific education sessions, with workshops addressing Food Safety and Inspection Service Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points validation, challenges and opportunities in meat product traceability and media training for meat and poultry industry professionals, among numerous other sessions. Additional events included a chili cookoff, a hot dog toss and a networking reception at the Georgia Aquarium, the world’s largest aquarium.
