(North American Meat Institute)

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) extended the comment period for the notice “ Use of the Term Natural in the Labeling of Human Food Products ” until May 10, 2016. FDA is requesting information and comments from the public regarding whether it is appropriate to define the term natural, how natural should be defined and how FDA should determine appropriate use of the term on food labels. FDA has considered the term “natural” to mean that nothing artificial or synthetic, including all color additives regardless of source, has been included in, or has been added to, a food that would not normally be expected to be in that food. Public comments may be submitted either electronically or by mail to Division of Dockets Management, HFA-305, Food and Drug Administration, 5630 Fishers Lane, Room 1061, Rockville, Maryland 20852. The Meat Institute and Grocery Manufacturers Association jointly requested an extension in the comment period.
