South Africa announced it will resume import of U.S. poultry under the "Protocol for Poultry Meat and Day-Old Chicks," a trade agreement signed by the two countries on November 13, 2015. The deal follows an announcement earlier this month by President Obama to suspend benefits to South African agricultural products under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) if the country failed to remove trade barriers. South Africa previously missed a deadline to finalize the deal, which sets forth a 65,000-ton quota for U.S. poultry imports that will open by December 31, 2015. South Africa's Department of Trade and Industry also said the two countries are on track to finalize outstanding issues related to beef and pork trade.
