The deep philosophical debate about whether a hot dog is a sandwich went viral last week following National Sandwich Day. It was discussed on the NBC Today Show, ESPN’s Sportscenter, in NFL locker rooms and across the Internet. Presidential candidate Carly Fiorina has also weighed in. In response, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC) issued a statement announcing its official policy saying, “Limiting the hot dog’s significance by saying it’s ‘just a sandwich’ is like calling the Dalai Lama ‘just a guy.’ Perhaps at one time its importance could be limited by forcing it into a larger sandwich category (no disrespect to Reubens and others), but that time has passed. We therefore choose to take a cue from a great performer and declare our namesake be a ‘hot dog formerly known as a sandwich.’”

The statement was picked up widely by the media including the Wall Street Journal’s Marketwatch, ABC Good Morning America , USA Today and Newsweek as well as many smaller outlets, and the NHDSC joined discussions on radio stations in San Francisco, California, Tyler, Texas and Tampa Bay, Florida to discuss the issue.
