Canada Reopens Market to EU Beef After 19-Year Ban

Canada reopened its market to beef exports from 19 European Union (EU) member states, lifting a ban imposed in 1996 that blocked imports in response to the spread of Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Europe. Canada audited meat inspection systems in four EU states prior to deciding the EU had taken steps to ensure BSE had been eliminated. Canada will now accept beef imports from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The U.S. has also resumed beef imports from the EU, under a strict monitoring process, beginning with Ireland in January 2015.
