TPP Provides Due Process for GI Names

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack last week underscored rules in the final Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement that will give the U.S. greater ability to challenge geographical food names in other countries. The TPP provisions require countries to provide a process for challenging a geographic indicator (GI) that can be confused with a trademark or generic food name. The U.S. has opposed the European Union's efforts to use trade deals to expand its system of geographical indications in other countries.
