FSIS Issues Notice Regarding Verification of Labeling of Imported Products Named "Beef Cube Roll"

Wednesday, October 28, 2015

(North American Meat Institute)

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a notice providing instructions to import inspection personnel (IPP) regarding ways to effectively handle imported beef products labeled with the product name "Beef Cube Roll," which is not a recognized common or usual name for any beef cut by the Agricultural Marketing Service in the Institutional Meat Purchase Specifications or in the Uniform Retail Meat Identity Standards. The correct common or usual name for this cut in the U.S. is "Beef Ribeye Roll." FSIS is instructing IPP not to fail the certification or label verification type of inspection for products labeled as "Beef Cube Roll" or other name variations. For any "Beef Cube Roll" shipments refused entry to the U.S., IPP are directed to use the "Appeal Refuse Entry" process in the Public Health Information System to close out the refused entry. The status of the refused shipment will then change to "Removed after appeal." FSIS will issue instructions to import inspection personnel to refuse entry of product labeled as "Beef Cube Roll" six months from the date of this notice.
