USDA released an interim report responding to specific statements made in a January New York Times article alleging inhumane practices at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) located in Clay Center, Nebraska. In its report, USDA identified 33 statements from the article to evaluate and determine their accuracy.
To address the article’s claims, USDA performed fieldwork at USMARC; reviewed available Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) documentation dating back to 1983; interviewed key individuals, including more than 30 current and former ARS and UNL personnel and members of the Secretary’s review panel; and researched meat industry and agricultural statistics and norms. The interim report provides information on the current status of USDA’s fieldwork and additional context to the statements made in the article. USDA will issue a final report at the completion of its fieldwork.share on facebook share on twitter
