President Obama nominated Robert Califf, M.D., to be the next commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Califf, who currently serves as FDA’s Deputy Commissioner for Medical Products and Tobacco, will succeed Dr. Margaret Hamburg, who resigned in March 2015 after six years as commissioner. Califf previously worked as a cardiologist, medical professor and researcher at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and is a graduate of Duke’s School of Medicine. Califf must first be confirmed by the U.S. Senate before assuming the position, but he is not expected to face significant opposition. As FDA Commissioner, Califf will be tasked with finalizing rules to implement the Food Safety Modernization Act and will handle pending food safety and labeling reforms, tobacco regulations and proposals to streamline drug reviews, among other issues.
