The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a draft guidance document to assist companies in complying with the menu labeling final rule, which requires calorie information to be listed on menus and menu boards in chain restaurants and similar retail food establishments with 20 or more locations. The guidance answers many of the most frequently asked questions about the rule, and is intended to help establishments implement and understand the flexibility in the rule. The document contains information about certain health and nutrition claims, food types, labeling details and other pertinent topics, and provides specific information about rule requirements. Covered establishments must comply with the rule by December 1, 2016. FDA is inviting public comments on the draft guidance, which can be submitted electronically or by mail to Division of Dockets Management (HFA-305), Food and Drug Administration, 5630 Fishers Lane, Room 1061, Rockville, Maryland 20852.
