House Passes GMO Labeling Bill; Debate Shifts to Senate

Wednesday, July 29, 2015

(North American Meat Institute)The U.S. House of Representatives last week voted 275-150 to pass the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015 (H.R. 1599), which would prohibit state-level laws regulating the labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food. The bill, which garnered the support of 45 Democrats, also would require a national standard for labeling laws that would exempt food companies from disclosing their use of GMOs. The legislation, however, allows companies to label their products as GMO-free by seeking USDA approval-a process that would operate similarly to USDA's organic certification initiative. Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) stated that the Senate will likely consider a companion measure this fall.
