FDA Announces Additional Revisions to Nutrition Facts Label

Wednesday, July 29, 2015

(North American Meat Institute)

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed additional revisions to the Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods. The supplemental proposed rule would require declaration of the percent daily value for added sugars on the Nutrition Facts Panel. FDA is basing the percent daily value on findings from the Scientific Report of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee , which recommends that daily intake of calories from added sugars not exceed 10 percent of total calories. FDA also proposed to shorten the current footnote on the Nutrition Facts label to more clearly explain the meaning of the percent daily value in the context of the daily diet. Comments on the supplementary proposed rule will be accepted through October 13, 2015. In addition, FDA reopened the comment period to solicit input on two consumer studies related to label formats. Comments on the consumer studies are due by September 25, 2015. Comments may be submitted electronically or by mail to Division of Dockets Management, HFA-305, Food and Drug Administration, 5630 Fishers Lane, Room 1061, Rockville, Maryland 20852.
