(North American Meat Institute)

The White House last week issued a memorandum directing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and USDA to update the Coordinated Framework for the Regulation of Biotechnology, develop a long-term strategy to ensure that the system is prepared for the future products of biotechnology and commission an expert analysis of the future landscape of biotechnology products to support this effort. The Administration aims to build public confidence in the regulatory system and improve the transparency, predictability, coordination and efficiency of the biotechnology regulatory system. A series of three public meetings will be held to discuss the proposed changes, with the first expected this fall in Washington, DC. The update also will be subject to a public notice and comment period before the proposed changes are finalized.
