Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Ash Carter penned an op-ed featured in USA Today calling on Congress to pass trade promotion authority (TPA) and underscoring the geostrategic and economic imperatives of passing President Obama's trade agenda. The secretaries referenced the benefits of trade for American workers and businesses, given that 95 percent of the world's consumers live outside the U.S., and highlighted the ability of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) to lower trade barriers among countries that constitute nearly 40 percent of the global economy. The op-ed stated that TPP would deepen America's alliances and partnerships abroad, while promoting a trade framework that establishes strict, enforceable labor and environmental standards. Kerry and Carter also stressed that finalizing TPP will bolster U.S. leadership abroad and foster a rules-based global economy that values openness and fairness.
