New Video Addresses Myth About Foodborne Illness Risks

NAMI and the American Meat Science Association released a new video in the Meat Mythcrushers series addressing common misconceptions about the prevalence of foodborne illness from different sources and explains that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data show that produce, not meat and poultry, is the most common source of foodborne illness in the U.S. The video, which marks the 43rd in the series, features Kathleen Glass, Ph.D., associate director of the Food Research Institute at the University of Wisconsin, who explains the risks of foodborne illness from a variety of sources, including meat and poultry, and notes that the most common illness is norovirus, which is often associated with food handlers. She also discusses the advances in the meat industry that have helped make meat and poultry safer for consumption. Dr. Glass offers additional insight regarding reasons why food may become contaminated, and outlines steps consumers can take to ensure their food is safe.
