Meat Institute Members Convene in Carlsbad for Management Conference

Meat Institute members this week will gather in Carlsbad, California, for the Meat Industry Management Conference , scheduled to take place April 15-18 at the Park Hyatt Aviara. The annual conference will feature education sessions covering an array of topics, including food safety, government regulations, communications, economics and workforce issues.

The conference will include presentations from Deputy Under Secretary for Food Safety and Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) Administrator Al Almanza, who will provide an FSIS regulatory update, and John Nalivka, president of Sterling Marketing, Inc., who will deliver an economic update on the meat industry. Chef Mike Erickson will speak at the opening general session, "True Beef," during which he will share a story about a vocational program making a difference in the lives of students by teaching about the meat industry from farm to fork.

The conference also offers several communications-specific sessions, including an in-person media training course that reviews essential message development and interview techniques, and provides attendees with an opportunity to practice these skills on camera. Additional education sessions will highlight successful social media strategies and will address effective ways to navigate through a crisis. Attendees can sign up for the Meat Institute's Communicators Advocating Meat and Poultry grassroots program , and can work with members of the NAMI staff to create a Twitter account to help spread positive messages about the industry.

NAMI committee, Board of Directors and membership meetings also will take place. All members are invited to attend the Board Meeting on Saturday, April 18. Numerous networking opportunities and social events, including the John Duyn Golf Tournament, have been scheduled. The popular Sausage Fest competition will showcase various sausage and ready-to-eat products from Meat Institute member companies, with the winning organization receiving the "Hold the Mustard" award.
