NAMI Hosts Transatlantic Meat Industry Dialogue on TTIP

NAMI hosted the first meeting of the U.S. and European Union (EU) meat industries to establish a dialogue on issues related to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (T-TIP). EU representatives Knud Buhl, Frans van Dongen and Jos Goebbels joined U.S. participants, including Meat Institute Senior Vice President of International Affairs Bill Westman, who chaired the meeting, and Ron Prestage, president of the National Pork Producers Council, among others. The meeting included a broad discussion regarding the mutual benefits of a transatlantic meat industry dialogue for Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures in T-TIP negotiations. EU and U.S. representatives agreed to work together to develop common positions on specific SPS measures to share with their respective negotiators. Potential issues upon which agreement is possible include EU approval of lactic acid for pork, meat inspection and equivalence, cloning for beef and dairy animals, evaluation of the U.S.-EU Veterinary Agreement and the use of antibiotics in food animals. Both sides also noted that new provisions should be considered to address specific SPS issues through the concept of equivalence. The next transatlantic meat industry dialogue meeting is expected to take place in Brussels, Belgium in early May.
