Meat Institute to Provide Testimony During Public Meeting on Dietary Guidelines

NAMI Vice President of Scientific Affairs Betsy Booren, Ph.D., will provide oral testimony on behalf of the Meat Institute during a public meeting on the Scientific Report of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC), scheduled for tomorrow, March 24. Booren will emphasize the importance of including meat and poultry, as well as processed meat products, in a healthy dietary pattern. She will also urge USDA and HHS to exclude extraneous factors, such as sustainability concerns and proposed taxes, from the final Dietary Guidelines for Americans because these recommendations are outside the scope of expertise and charter of the DGAC. The Meat Institute's comments express concern regarding the lack of scientific evidence used to develop the final DGAC report, noting that more than 70 percent of DGAC recommendations were not based on the reviews of the Nutritional Evidence Library.

NAMI Vice President of Regulatory and Scientific Programs Susan Backus will also provide oral testimony on behalf of the Back to Balance Coalition , of which NAMI is a member. Backus will note that recommendations in the final 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans policy document should be practical, affordable and achievable, and should affirm the core principles of balance, variety and moderation. Backus will cite ways in which restrictive advice that classifies food as "bad" or "good" is overly simplistic and may result in unintended consequences.

Meanwhile, USDA and HHS have extended by an additional 30 days the period to receive public comments on the DGAC's scientific report. Public comments are now invited through May 8, 2015. To submit written comments, click here .
